AI & Education: Safety, Customization, and Transformative Technologies

Hey folks, the first global AI Safety Summit in the UK is over, it’s a process that will take time, Elon Musk has released the first public version to a limited number, and I have signed up for the waiting list. It’s intended to rival ChatGPT, talking of ChatGPT, OpenAI had their DEvday, made lots of announcements of new features and upgrades, lots of developer tools, and a marketplace for selling custom GPTs, I’m looking forward to trying some experiments out, I think that there are some features that might help me with some prompts I am crafting. Still working on adding a tool directory to Goblin in the Attic. Testing an AI tool that generates comics, and I have a story idea to try out. Starting to experiment with some more complex prompts, also working on some prompt guides.

News

  • UK AI Safety Summit - The AI Safety Summit held discussions on various ambitious policies related to AI governance, focusing on issues such as the need for legal or regulatory measures for existing voluntary commitments, setting common international safety standards, and implementing safety testing throughout the lifecycle of AI models. Participants also emphasized the importance of government involvement in testing models, the potential risks associated with open-source models, and the need to address AI's impact on elections. Additionally, the summit highlighted the necessity of ensuring equity in AI benefits and safeguarding against its harms. In response to these concerns, the UK government took a significant step by launching the world’s first AI Safety Institute, aimed at evaluating advanced AI systems, driving foundational AI safety research, and facilitating information exchange among various stakeholders. While these initiatives represent a positive move towards addressing AI-related challenges, the ongoing hype around AI underscores the importance of continued efforts to ensure responsible development and governance, with active input from diverse voices and perspectives to navigate this evolving landscape effectively.

  • Grok - xAI announced a select group will be trying out Elon Musk’s AI model, Grok is designed to answer questions with a bit of wit and has a rebellious streak, so please don’t use it if you hate humour! A unique and fundamental advantage of Grok is that it has real-time knowledge of the world via the 𝕏 platform. It will also answer spicy questions that are rejected by most other AI systems.

OpenAI DEvday & new features - New GPT-4 Turbo, Updated GPT-3.5 Turbo, Assistants API, Multimodal capabilities, Customizable GPTs in ChatGPT

OpenAI released GPT-4 Turbo, a more capable language model with knowledge up to April 2023. It has a 128k context window and is 3x cheaper for input tokens and 2x cheaper for output tokens compared to GPT-4. The model can call multiple functions in a single message and is better at following instructions and generating JSON format. Developers can now get reproducible outputs and log probabilities for the most likely output tokens.

Alongside GPT-4 Turbo, OpenAI is releasing an upgraded GPT-3.5 Turbo with a 16K context window, enhanced instruction following, JSON mode and parallel function calling. Developers can access it via the gpt-3.5-turbo-1106 API call. Older models will remain available until June 13, 2024.

OpenAI's Assistants API empowers developers to build agent-like experiences within their applications. It features Code Interpreter for writing and executing Python code, Retrieval for augmenting assistants with external knowledge, and function calling for incorporating custom functions. Persistent and infinitely long threads allow for continuous conversation flow. The API's flexibility enables the creation of a wide range of AI-powered applications.

OpenAI introduces new modalities in the API, enhancing capabilities for developers. GPT-4 Turbo now supports images in the Chat Completions API, enabling tasks like generating captions and aiding the visually impaired. Vision support is accessible via gpt-4-vision-preview, with plans for integration into the main model. Pricing varies based on image size. Additionally, DALL·E 3 is available to ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise users, allowing image generation through the Images API. Built-in moderation safeguards against misuse, and prices start at $0.04 per generated image. The text-to-speech API offers six voices and two model variants, optimizing for real-time use or quality. Pricing begins at $0.015 per input 1,000 characters. Explore OpenAI's guides for detailed instructions on these innovations.

OpenAI unveils model customization options with experimental access to GPT-4 fine-tuning. While it requires more effort for significant improvements compared to GPT-3.5, developers using GPT-3.5 fine-tuning can transition to GPT-4 once quality and safety are enhanced. Additionally, a Custom Models program caters to organizations with vast proprietary datasets, enabling tailored GPT-4 training in collaboration with dedicated OpenAI researchers. Exclusive access and stringent privacy policies ensure data confidentiality, making this opportunity limited and specialized.
